An organisation that brings together "emerging leaders" through residential courses and integrates them into the existing ruling class ethos by mixing with other business leaders, politicians and quango heads, to "Show them where the levers of power are and how they work. In it's own words: "Common Purpose started work in 1989 in two pilot cities: Coventry and Newcastle. The initial programmes brought together emerging leaders from all the different sectors of the community and showed them how much they had in common. How much they stood to gain by understanding how each other—and their city—really worked. And how to make better professional decisions based on the appreciation of the bigger picture rather than the increasingly specialised knowledge and influence which characterise most professional lives."
