Nature of Business: Grocery stores - supermarkets
Established in 1899 by Ken Morrison's parents as an 'Egg and Butter Merchants'. First supermarket established in former Victoria Cinema off Thornton Rd., Girlington in early 1960's. In 1967 Morrisons became a Plc.
By 1972 the group had 12 stores, mainly in the north of England, and a new meat products firm "Farmers Boy", but over the next 25 years this built up to 86 stores across the country. In 1997 John Dowd became Managing Director and took over the routine day to day running of the empire.
By 2000 - the groups Centennial year, there were 105 stores, with major redevelopment of the original store to make it one of the two biggest (the other in Idle) with a new meat products "Farmers Boy" factory nearby.
Known for it's "no frills" cut-price approach it was by then taking over £3 billion annually at the tills and was the 5th biggest of the supermarket giants with a market value of almost £3 billion.
