1 in 12 back - and free

Rock On by John Mahoney, T&A, 22 Feb 1983

BRADFORD’S long-lost 1 in 12 Club is back with a music spectacular which won’t cost a penny.

A free gig goes ahead this Friday at the city’s Textile Hall with Leeds indie band The 3 Johns topping the bill.

Supporting the 3 Johns, pictured, are Bradford synths band The Word, Monkey On A Rope and Wild Willi Beckett, who will double up as compere for the evening.

The whole gig is designed to prove the 1 in 12 club may be gone but not forgotten. Moves are underway to establish the club once again at a new venue after it folded at its Metropole base last year.

The gig is also to promote a new cassette called The Worst Of The 1 in 12 Club, Volume 2, featuring 17 local acts. The tape, costing £2 from HMV or Bradford Centre Against Unemployment, is reviewed below.

The 1 in 12 Club was a non-profitmaking venture relying on organisation and performing from predominantly the unemployed.

In a statement, the 1 in 12 collective say:

‘We are still about. We have organised this free gig to show that.

"At present we are trying to find our own premises where we can set up the club on a full-time basis. So far the council won’t let us use any of their empty premises but we intend to step up the pressure."

An open meeting to discuss the future of the club is being held at The Royal Standard pub on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 12.30 p.m.
