SKIVE OFF & JIVE

Leeds Other Paper, August 12, 1983

Sometimes strange characters turn up at the ‘1 IN 12’ Club on a Wednesday night, like the two pictured here. These two stiff looking blokes arrived identically dressed in new gear and spent 4 1/2 hours with only a half pint each, having, to judge from their looks, a thoroughly miserable time. It was punk night, with five local bands on. Everyone else thought it was great.

One of the two was so bored that he started writing in a notepad a one point.

Last on was the excellent punk band Chumbawamba, their strong visual anti-war theme was too much for the duo to bear, and after noticing that their photo had been taken, they departed and disappeared into the night in a smart hatchback saloon parked nearby. No-one knew who the two were, or what their interest in the "1 IN 12" Club was, but perhaps a cryptic clue as to their identity lay in the motif on their T-shirts, advertising now defunct Bristol punks, 'The Vice-Squad’.

Meanwhile, the "1 IN 12" Club, along with B.C.A.U. are busy organising the second annual free open-air festival to be held on Saturday 13 August at the back of Bradford University. Bands playing include The 3-Johns, Anti-System, Skeletal Family, Spectre, Boys From the East, Requiem, Inevitable Split, Fatal Charm, 20th Century Hats and The Toyz, plus local poets and performance artists. Also there will be an abundance of stalls, food and drink, with inflatables and a puppet show for the kids.

Nowt else is happening of this nature in the area, so don’t miss it! Starts at noon sharp.
