Not the International Garden Festival

Leeds Other Paper, July 27, 1984

FOLLOWING three highly successful festivals, Bradford’s 1 in 12 Club and Bradford Centre Against Unemployment have again got together to plan this year’s ‘Not the International Garden Festival’.

The festival - to be held this Saturday, July 28th - will feature eight local bands from the Bradford/ Leeds area Little Germany, Chumbawumba, Sheehees, Morbid Humour, The Word, Chronic, Coptic Roots and The Convulsions.

Compering the event will by local poets and performers, including Little Brother, Wild WiIIi Beckett and Dirk Spig. The festival, which has been supported by a grant from Bradford Council, will run from 11.00 am to 8.00 pm in the Amphitheatre of Bradford University.

Off-stage entertainments include inflatables, sounds systems, food, drink and a variety of stalls run by local groups.

The 1 in 12 Club was started in April ‘81. It gets its name from the suggestion in the Raynor Report that 1 in 12 claimants are defrauding the state. It fairly quickly established itself as a regular cheap venue for local bands and alternative social scene for those of us without much money and a desire to control our own entertainment. It regularly attracts bands from around the country.

Apart from publishing a regular fanzine, club members have also produced a book of verse by Bradford poets Spig and Wild Willi Beckett, illustrated by poetess Joolz, and also two compilation tapes, "The Worst of 1 in 12 vols I & Il" featuring 37 bands/artists who have played the Club.

1 in 12 is now recognised as a major Northern venue for up and coming bands, and links have been created with Dutch bands who have also played the Club, two of whom are featured on the Club’s new compilation LP ‘Enemies of the State’.

At the moment the Club is based at the Market Tavern, but hopefully will soon have their own premises.
